Water Bore Drilling in Dubbo

Leaking storage tanks at a service station site in Dubbo contaminated an area of alluvial groundwater, and a 2012 NSW Government document recorded a 500 m buffer around the plume inside which water supply works would not be permitted. That figure is a 2012 record, not a confirmed rule today, so ask the Department before you site a bore in Dubbo.

Water Bore Drilling around Dubbo

The background document to the Macquarie Bogan water sharing plan, dated September 2012, says a service station site in Dubbo has been declared a site of significant risk of harm to human health and the environment, due to storage tanks leaking and contaminating an area of alluvial groundwater. It goes on to say that water supply works will not be permitted within 500m of the contaminant plume from this site. The document names no street and no business. It also says the town's water supply draws on the Upper Macquarie alluvial groundwater source.

The plan has since been replaced, and the 2012 provisions were not read in the current plan, so the 500 m figure is what was recorded then. What the Department's water resource plan says today is that the rules have offset distances from known contamination sites and plumes, to limit mobilisation of a plume from pumping. Which distance applies to a particular block, and whether the plume affects it, is for the Department to say. This page does not say which water source any address sits over.

Permits and Dubbo Regional Council rules

Whether a bore at a given address is approved is for the NSW Department to decide: it says you need a water supply work approval to construct a groundwater bore, including a household one. No Dubbo Regional Council rule on bores was read for this page.
